Ray Charles Live In Antibes (1983)
In 1983, during their short European summer tour which began on July 7 in Reykjavik (!), and also led them to Andorra, the Ray Charles aggregation made their “usual” stop in Antibes, on July 19. The setlist was not adventurous in any sense, but the reed players (Don Wilkinson was on board!) were red hot. Ray, sounding as if it was a last-second decision, felt obliged to explicitly promote his new Columbia album Wish You Were Here Tonight (presenting the hardcore country tunes # 15 and 16 to the French jazz audience).
I’ve listened to a nearly complete audio copy (tunes # 01 – 16; INA ID PHY13030558) of the concert that was aired (probably live) by Radio France Côte Azur, but the same source, INA, has archived an additional tape that includes # 17 and 18 (INA ID PMY14001044).
