Ray’s Other Hand (1961)

Off topic

From Jet magazine, Apr. 20 and 27, and May 25, 1961.

20 March 1961: Ray Jr. finds his father with an arterial bleeding from his left hand. After his house doctor’s treatment, Sr. resumes playing after a week or so. According to legend, for the next weeks Ray would play piano with his right hand only, but the photo above shows that he (soon?) resumed using his left hand.

26 March 1961: Concert at Pyramids in Baltimore postponed.

April – May 1961: On Hal Zeigler tour with extended big band; a.o. St. Louis,  Masonic Auditorium in Detroit (where Joe Adams was engaged as emcee), Cleveland, and Chicago; tour ending at Carnegie Hall.

8 – 9 April 1961: McCormick Place, Chicago (see page from Jet, above); with Betty Carter.

November 1961: Release of the single But On The Other Hand, Baby (b/w Unchain My Heart).
